The 49ers entered the 2013 season as the defending NFC champions, qualified for the playoffs as the fifth seed Wild Card, and hoped to win a sixth Super Bowl title, after falling just short during the previous season. in 2012 they faced the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl in what pitted brothers who were head coaches against each other for the first time ever. The 49ers ended up losing the Super Bowl, but expectations remain high for future championships due to the high caliber of talented players and the leadership of head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The 49ers played since 1971 in Candlestick Park, which is one of the older venues in the league and been open since 1960. The seating capacity is 70,000 people. The stadium is located downtown and is also the home field for the San Francisco Giants baseball team.

In 2014, The Levi's Stadium will be the new home for the 49ers and is located in San Clara. It will be an open stadium with a natural grass field with a seating capacity of 68,500, expandable to approximately 75,000 to host major events like WrestleMania, the Super Bowl and the FIFA World Cup. The seating design of the stadium puts approximately two‐thirds of the fans in the lower bowl. It will be one of the largest lower bowls in the entire NFL.
